As a new player in the Dust world I have to say this is something that bugged me right from the start. Playing RPG's more than FPS' I'm used to picking a character/role at the start of a game and living with those consequences.
I was going to come on this thread and say that this is absolutely this is the way I think that Dust should work with races as, currently, choosing a race at the start of the game seems to do little more than determine your avatar and appearance in the Academy. To me this seemed wasted and a bit disappointing.
Before reading through this thread I was all for saying that race should in some way affect the way your character can use dropsuits.
In my head I was thinking maybe either an PG/CPU efficiency penalty to running a non racial dropsuit or a reduction in the suits passive bonus'. Think a light armour character trying to equip heavy armour, or a rogue with a broadsword. Now I personally would not be anti a mechanic like this and think that it would make having multiple characters and accounts have more purpose and mean that dedicated players SP might be more likely to be spread thinner over each one, as well as making the race selection in some way meaningful. It is a difficult thing to do without full racial parity though.
However having read through this thread and others like it I realise and understand why people don't want to see this type of mechanic and get that people like being able to be a battlefield swiss army knife and have the freedom to run everything, anytime, anywhere with one character. It is fun after all and requires a lot of commitment to achieve.
The move to bring in racial weapons for starter fits is a welcome addition to NPE in my eyes, and is something I am disappointed to have missed out on. It arguably means that there needs to be a bit more explanation prior to character creation for each of the races, maybe a way to preview your starter suit and stats before committing. Coupled with this the other idea that I have seen, and like, is that your racial choices defines your access to early skill tree unlocks. E.g Gallente will have skill books for Armour, Armour Repair, Assault Rifle etc pre-purchased as standard, nudging early racial playstyle but ultimately not restricting, a merc having to pay a bit extra in order to use the 'competitions' equipment kind of makes sense too.
Not really an idea or a suggestion more of a brain dump really........ back to work I go. |
